Colours of Summer

from the 26th February to the 20th March 2016

Colours of Summer is a joint exhibition by friends Rachael Errington and Emma Butler.  Both of these artists have a vibrant and colourful style.  Butler is best known for her Ruby character series and Errington is renowned for her stylistic tree paintings.

Rachael has very kindly donated a stunning piece to be auctioned with the money raised going to the local Leg up Trust.  Bidding has already started on this piece and can be viewed at:  http://www.rachaelerrington.com/charity-auction.html

Rachael Errington

"I grew up living in the middle of an English wood, where my brother and I spent most of our time making dens and treehouses. It is undoubtedly this experience that created my fascination with painting trees. I would stand for ages with both hands on a tree, trying to see if there really are tree spirits. I believe there are.

The colours that strike me the most are the depth and warmth of autumn, and the fresh lime green tones of spring. I'm endlessly fascinated with using different techniques to recreate the colours.  Painting and art is my passion; it's all I ever want to do. The trees paintings are an extension of that passion."

Emma Butler - THE 'RUBY' COLLECTION:

The Ruby collection is a body of work which revolves around a central character, Ruby, a quirky little girl who is always on an adventure, at one with nature and accompanied by her faithful dog Scarlett. Often found strolling through a tree lined village with a bird on her head, Ruby exudes happiness. I have explored Ruby in many different mediums including acrylic on canvas and mixed media on board.

I was inspired to paint Ruby after moving to the South Island of New Zealand from England. I was struck by the intense colour the trees turn in Autumn, when the little gold mining village of Arrowtown ignites with reds, oranges and yellows. I wanted to convey the intense explosion of colour at this time of year without the boredom of its conveyance. So I created Ruby, who has the "awe and the wonder" as she wanders her way through a vibrant and colourful world.

My future goal for Ruby is to encapsulate her story in a big bright children's book and distribute world wide.
