Chris Bone

Chris Bone was born in Hastings in 1963, educated locally and then at Otago University, and since 1993 has lived and worked as a Land Surveyor in Southern Hawke’s Bay.

His passion in art is for 19th and early 20th century New Zealand and Australian landscape paintings, in which he follows a long line of surveyor landscape artists, that can be traced back to the earliest days of European settlement in both countries.

Steadfastly self taught, he paints only in the oil medium, with a reputation for particular fine detailed brushwork and attention to topographical detail in his traditional landscapes. Inspiration is taken from places he has grown up in or worked over in the course of his surveying, covering as it does the entire Hawke’s Bay province from the Manawatu Gorge in the south through to Mahia Peninsula in the north.

Paintings range from the popular miniatures to the more traditional larger sizes, with his reputation continuing to grow through his work selling steadily in select galleries and established art shows.
