Liz Petrie lives in Swannanoa, North Canterbury on a lifestyle block next to the family farm.
Liz has been painting since the early 1990's and has sold her artworks to New Zealanders and to overseas buyers. Her earlier works were acrylic on canvas and subjects included landscapes and abstract works.
Lately, Liz has been painting in oils and has found a passion for painting animal portraits, particularly Hares at present. She uses a layering method, allowing the paint to dry between layers to gradually transform the painting. She tries to capture a sense of the animal's personality, bringing it to life and encouraging the viewer to connect with the animal. Liz has found that many people do enjoy these paintings and do seem to be able to establish a connection with the subject. Even though in New Zealand Hares can be viewed as a pest we can still appreciate the beauty that they hold whether that be their wildness, enduring nature or their appealing faces.
Liz exhibits frequently in group exhibitions and has her works in galleries in both the North and South Island, and in 2018 Liz won an award at the Dartfield Art week for one of her Hare paintings
