Merv Appleton

Contemporary landscape artist, Merv Appleton was born in Auckland New Zealand in 1946. His interest in painting began from early childhood when he was greatly inspired by the works of Peter McIntyre and Douglas Badcock. After leaving School, he trained as a Signwriter and Commercial Artist. After a successful career in the sign and commercial art field, Merv decided to pursue his passion for painting the landscapes and coastal areas that surrounded him,

Fascinated by the light and atmosphere and how it affected the landscape, he soon discovered the importance of painting from observation and became a keen Plein Air Painter. He is now sort after for workshops and demonstrations and enjoys passing this knowledge on to developing artists.

While painting on location and from observation is important to Merv, many of his Plein Air studies become larger works produced in his studio at Eastern Beach, Auckland. Merv has exhibited successfully throughout New Zealand, Australia and Europe and has developed a keen following of collectors both here and overseas with many of his works being held in private and corporate collections such as the Prestige's Gallipoli Memorial Club Museum in Sydney Australia.
