Kylie Matheson was born in Dunedin in 1981. Painting had always been a passion from early teens years. In recent times she has developed a love for ceramics. Self taught in both areas Kylie has had great pleasure finding new ways to create and grow as an Artist. Kylie's love and respect for animals shows in her work, often showing human emotion, allowing her audience to connect with her pieces. Kylie's work has been called quirky and whimsical yet still raw in appearance. Her recent work include markings of a red arrow and two red rings around the eye of the animal. The red arrow facing up, has come from a tattoo her Grandfather had done when he was at war, this reminds Kylie of where she has come from and to always look up. The red war paint around the eye indicates battle and alert vision. These markings have been inspired by the Native American war horses. The Native Americans have a great respect for there animals and live a simple and raw life, in which Kylie relates to.
Her other Grandfather has been her great mentor in her life, always reminding her nothing is impossible if you believe in what you do. And with sheer determination Kylie has managed to be self employed as an artist for 10 years. After 7 years on New Zealand's open road traveling in her bus ,and the last 3 years spent in the Hawks Bay, Kylie Matheson returns to her home town Dunedin to live and work full time as an artist. The hard decision to stop traveling allowed Kylie to move to a more professional approach to selling her work in gallery's and enabled her to take up ceramics, a study of which she is most passionate.
